Nationals sign the 27 year old right hander who has been ravaged by injuries
The Nationals have signed 27 year old right hander Mike Soroka per Ken Rosenthal. Soroka pitched for the Chicago White Sox last season where he posted a 4.74 ERA in 25 appearances including nine starts. Soroka’s deal is one year for nine million dollars with the Nationals planning on using him as a starter.
Soroka looked like an up and coming star before back to back achilles tears kept him out for years. It will be interesting to see how the Nationals use Soroka. While he has traditionally been a starter, he was most effective in a multi-inning relief role last season. However, the Nationals think this production could translate to the rotation.
As a reliever, Soroka posted a 2.75 ERA in 36 innings across 16 appearances. Most notably, he struck out 60 batters in those 36 innings. Soroka’s control has not been the same since the injuries, but as he gets further removed from them, he could find something. He is an interesting flyer for the Nationals, who has some untapped potential. If you are expecting 2019 Mike Soroka, you will be disappointed, but he has potential to be a valuable asset.
