The Nationals top pitching prospect is on the shelf until at least May
While arrival of pitchers and catchers marks the beginning of a new season, it is also when injuries are revealed. Unfortunately for the Nats, their top pitching prospect Travis Sykora will be on the shelf.
General Manager Mike Rizzo announced that the 20 year old right hander will be out until at least May with a hip injury. At least it is not an arm injury, but this is a bummer for Sykora, who is a rising star in the Nationals system. He was supposed to be with the team in West Palm Beach with fellow pitching prospect Jarlin Susana.
After being taken in the third round in the 2023 draft, Sykora had a fabulous season in 2024. In 85 innings at Low-A, he posted a 2.33 ERA, with 129 strikeouts. 2025 was meant to be the year where Sykora takes off and starts to shoot up the minor leagues.
Of course, that could still happen but it is now on delay. When he returns, he should start at High-A Wilmington. Barring any setbacks, this injury shouldn’t alter plans too much. However, the Nats are now going to have to monitor his health even more closely. With an unorthodox delivery, Sykora always had injury risk, but at least his arm is fine.
Hopefully Travis gets back quickly in May and dominates hitters just like he did last season!
