The Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Baltimore Orioles 3-2 in walk-off fashion on Sunday. The walk-off was the second consecutive such win by the Pirates this series. The loss seemed improbable with the Orioles leading 2-1 after 8 1/2 innings due, in large part, to the dominant effort put forth by Orioles starter Dean Kremer.
Kremer allowed one unearned run on five hits, struck out six and committed a throwing error over 7.0 innings but left with nothing to show for it.
Keegan Akin (1.0 IP) pitched a clean eighth inning but the wheels came off the cart with Yennier Cano (1-1) pitching in the ninth. Cano promptly loaded the bases by allowing two single and a walk. A forceout at home that was overturned upon challenge kept the bases loaded with one out. Cano the induced Pittsburgh’s Edward Olivares into a ground ball uo the middle that Gunnar Henderson (0 for 4) made a diving stop on, tagged second base with his glove for the second out and then made an errant throw to first that allowed Connor Joe to score the winning run. Cano took the loss, allowing 2 runs, 1 earned, on 2 hits with a walk in 0.2 inning.
Again, the Baltimore bats were relatively silent, especially when compared to the 24 runs and 24 hits recorded in the first two games of the season.
Ryan Mountcastle went 3 for 4 with 2 doubles, a run scored and 1 RBI.
Adley Rutschman went 1 for 4 with a run scored.
Jorge Mateo went 1 for 3 with a double.
Anthony Santander went 1 for 4 with 1 RBI.
2024 Record: 5-4
