The Baltimore Orioles fell to the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-4 in 11 innings on Saturday. With the Birds down 3-2 and limited to just two doubles after eight innings, an ending like this did not seem possible. The Orioles tied the game in the ninth and took a brief lead in the top of the tenth, only to see the Pirates tie the game again in their half of the tenth. Despite a game preserving diving catch by Cedric Mullins in the eleventh, the Bucos walked it off on an Oneil Cruz single.
With just four hits and going 0 for 14 with runners in scoring position, it is amazing that the Orioles still had a chance to take the victory. In the end however, the Birds just could not get the key hit needed to win.
Jordan Westburg went 2 for 5 with a double and 2 runs scored.
Jorge Mateo went 1 for 3 with a double.
Ryan O’Hearn went 1 for 2.
Gunnar Henderson went 0 for 4 with a walk but did steal 2 bases off of Aroldis Chapman in the eighth.
Austin Hays (0 for 3, RBI) and Anthony Santander (0 for 4, R, BB) had highlight worthy diving catches of their own.
Starter Tyler Wells allowed 3 runs on 7 hits (1 HR), walked 2 and struck out 3 over 5.1 innings.
Dillon Tate (0.2 IP), Keegan Akin (1.0 IP, H, 2 K), Jacob Webb (1.0 IP, H, 2 K) and Craig Kimbrel (1.0 IP, K). Danny Coulombe (1.0 IP, K) did his best Houdini act, getting out of an inherited bases loaded situation in the 1oth inning with no outs. Coulombe induced an infield fly, got a force out at home plate and struck out a batter.
Jonathan Heasley (0-1) took the loss, facing just two batters.
