Wednesday was Jackson Holliday Day in Baltimore, a celebratory day in the city because the Baltimore Orioles purchased Holliday’s contract and called him up to the Major League team. Holliday made his MLB debut in Fenway Park but sadly the Boston Red Sox did not celebrate the holiday.
For the record, the Orioles beat the Red Sox 7-5. Holliday went 0 for 4 with a RBI and struck out twice. He did help turn a double play in the second inning but failed to make a difficult over-the-shoulder catch of a Tyler O’Neill pop up to short right field in the third inning.
The Orioles trailed 5-0 after five innings before breaking through with three runs in the sixth. Jordan Westburg (2 for 3 with a double, a homerun, 1 run scored, 3 RBI, HBP) capped off a four run seventh with a three run homerun in the seventh inning that proved to be the difference in the contest.
Gunnar Henderson went 1 for 4 with a triple and a walk.
Colton Cowser went 1 for 4 with a run scored, 2 RBI and a walk. He also made two spectacular catches at the Green Monster in the eighth inning.
Ryan Mountcastle went 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored and a walk.
Cole Irvin started and was touched for 5 runs on 7 hits (1 HR) while walking 3 and striking out 4. He was the victim of several missed ball/strike calls by homeplate umpire Bruce Dreckman.
Mike Baumann (1-0) was credited with the win for a 1 hit, 3 strikeout sixth inning.
Keegan Akin was solid once again, walking 1 and striking out 4 over 2.0 innings.
Craig Kimbrel (1.0 IP, 2 K) earned his second save of the season.
2024 Record: 7-4
