A 14-year veteran of elected office in Prince George’s County before her win in November, Angela Alsobrooks and her barrier-breaking victory marked a new era, not just in Maryland politics, but also in the country.
She is Maryland’s first Black senator and — with the election of Lisa Blunt Rochester from Delaware at the same time — her service means two Black women are serving in the exclusive 100-person chamber for the first time.
“There have been more than 2,000 people who have served in the United States Senate — and only three have looked like me,” Alsobrooks, said in a rousing election night speech in November. “And so I want to salute all of those who came before me, who made it possible for me to stand on this stage tonight, whose sacrifices and stories I will continue to carry with me.”
