Tuesday in Boston was supposed to be a celebration. The Boston Red Sox, after a ten game roadtrip, were finally playing their 2024 home opener and were also celebrating the twenty year anniversary of the team that broke the curse and won the 2004 World Series. The Baltimore Orioles were not content to let the Red Sox enjoy the day however, defeating the Sox by a wicked score of 7-1.
Starter Corbin Burnes (2-0) set the tone for the Birds. He bounced back from a first inning homerun by Boston’s Tyler O’Neill and retired 18 of the next 20 batters he faced, including the final 12 batters. Burnes earned the win and allowed 1 run on 2 hits (HR) while walking 2 and striking out 6 in 7.0 innings of work.
Making his first start in Boston’s Fenway Park, Colton Cowser went 2 for 4 with 2 doubles and 4 RBI. The last Orioles rookie to tally 4 or more RBI against the Red Sox was Trey Mancini in 2017. Combined with shutdown pitching of Burnes, this pair was enough to defeat the Red Sox on their own.
Gunnar Henderson went 2 for 5 with a double, 2 runs scored and a stolen base.
Adley Rutschman went 2 for 5 with a run scored and 1 RBI.
Cedric Mullins went 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored, 1 RBI, a walk and a stolen base.
Anthony Santander (1 for 5, RBI), Ryan O’Hearn (1 for 3, R, 2 BB), Ryan Mountcastle (1 for 5, R) and Ramon Urias (1 for 5) each recorded a hit as well.
The Baltimore bullpen shut the door on the Red Sox with Danny Coulombe striking out all three batters he face on the eighth inning and Jacob Webb striking out one of three in the ninth.
2024 Record: 6-4
