After Orioles catcher James McCann was struck in the face by a 95 MPH fastball during Monday’s game against Toronto, Baltimore has called up catcher Blake Hunt from AAA Norfolk. Despite multiple nose fractures, McCann has been cleared to play. However, the Orioles will likely avoid using him for at least a few days. Blake Hunt is a newer addition to the Orioles organization, traded in May 2024 from the Seattle Mariners. Hunt hit for a .222 average throughout Triple-A in 2024, with a career average of .243 since 2017.
To make room for Hunt, RHP Cole Irvin has been designated for assignment. He has posted a 4.85 ERA over 94.2 innings in 2024. However, Irvin’s ERA over the past seven games has sat at a whopping 9.55 over 21.2 innings. He has given up 36 hits and 23 earned runs during those seven games, which led to his anticipated DFA.
