It was an up and down week for the Baltimore Orioles, who went 5-2 last week. The O’s started the week with a three-game sweep against the Boston Red Sox. They fell down early every game but came back to win in dramatic fashion. Baltimore didn’t have the same luck against the Brewers however, as they dropped two of three. One player had an outstanding series in both: outfielder Colton Cowser.
Cowser has really started to find his stride after struggling in 2023. Cowser was the main catalyst for the O’s offense this week. He had an average of .435 with four home runs, 12 RBIs and two doubles in five games. The four home runs this past week were the first of his career, and they came in dramatic fashion.
The first home run of his career came in the fifth inning against the Red Sox on Thursday. The O’s were down 2-0, and the offense hadn’t touched Red Sox starter Garrett Whitlock. Cowser’s home run over the monster brought the O’s within one and started the rally. Boston would score once more, and the Orioles would score two to send the game to extra innings. Cowser struck again, hitting a 438′ bomb to right field. The three-run home run gave the Orioles a 9-3 lead in the tenth inning.
The third home run of his career was not as dramatic as the first two. The O’s were down early again to the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday evening. Baltimore was down 4-0 and had not recorded a hit yet in the game. The Milk Man came to save the day for the time being, hitting a 415′-foot blast into right center to put the Birds on the board.
His most recent home run occurred on Sunday against the Brewers in the series finale. Baltimore was clinging to a one-run lead and looking to avoid the sweep. Cowser delivered an insurance run on a 422′-foot home run to right center, proving to seal the deal in a 6-4 victory.
Many fans were optimistic after Cowser struggled late in 2023. He’s put those doubters to bed so far in 2024, hitting .441/.474/.1.445 in 13 games. He’s also provided a great glove in the outfield with two spectacular grabs in left against Boston. In a season filled with uncertainty, one thing remains the same: the Milk Man ALWAYS delivers!
