A somber Mayor Brandon Scott looked ahead to a second Donald Trump presidency Wednesday, saying he was proud of Vice President Kamala Harris and her campaign, and that Marylanders can still be proud of instate leadership.
Harris won Maryland’s 10 electoral votes with over 60% of the vote, according to Associated Press estimates of unofficial returns with 79% of votes counted. In Baltimore she won over 84%.
“I don’t know everything that a second Trump presidency will bring to Baltimore, but if he follows through on some of his dark and violent promises, we know that we are looking at challenges in the years ahead,” Scott said in a video posted to social media. “Baltimore will always be a place that welcomes and protects our residents no matter what they look like, who they love, where they were born or how they choose to live their lives.”
In the Instagram video, Scott lamented the loss for black women in a country “steeped in racism, sexism and misogyny.”
Scott won reelection to a second mayoral term with over 80% of the vote Tuesday night.
“It is really on my heart this morning to say that as a man, but more importantly as a black man, that this country does not deserve black women,” Scott said. “They have carried this country and saved this country too many times and continue to be the most disrespected human beings on the planet and quite frankly it disgusts me.”
