Cade Povich had a strong debut, Grayson Rodriguez is ready to step up, and more in today’s news
Happy Monday, Camden Chatters! Spring is in the air. The Orioles have two spring training games under their belt (one win, one loss) and the temperatures in central Maryland this week will be in the 50s. We’re getting close! Just 31 days until Opening Day.
In yesterday’s game against the Phillies, Cade Povich made his spring debut with two hitless innings. He did not allow a ball out of the infield. Rodolfo Martinez pitched an inning with a home run allowed and Brandon Young pitched three shutout innings.
On offense, we saw presumed major leaguers Colton Cowser, Heston Kjerstad, and Coby Mayo. The first two were hitless and Mayo had an RBI single. Hot prospect Samuel Basallo made his spring debut with a hit. Someone named Vimael Machín hit a home run. The Orioles won 7-3.
Dean Kremer will make his spring debut today. Charlie Morton will start on Tuesday and Tomoyuki Sogano on Wednesday.
Today’s game was originally scheduled for 1 p.m. today but it has been pushed to 4 p.m. due to the weather report in Sarasota. No matter what the time, you cannot watch this either MASN or via Braves TV. If you’re a real sicko, you can listen to the Braves’ radio feed via MLB.tv.
Curiously, Adley Rutschman has yet to make an appearance this spring. Maybe today will be the day we see him in then lineup.

A big season from Cade Povich would go a long way for the Orioles rotation. Although as it stands now i don’t see how he cracks the opening day roster.

Birthdays and History
Is today your birthday? Happy birthday! You have four Orioles birthday buddies, led by Hall of Famer Eddie Murray. Today is Steady Eddie’s 69th birthday. He had a 21-season career including 13 with the Orioles. As an Oriole, he hit 343 of his 504 career home runs. He had a .370 OBP with Baltimore and an OPS+ of 139. He was Rookie of the Year in 1977 and was voted into the Hall of Fame in 2003. He is also very cool.
Also born on this day are one time catching prospect Chance Sisco (30), 2015 Oriole Chris “Chicken Parm” Parmelee (37), and 2007 seven-game Gustavo Molina (43).
On this day in 2014, the Orioles signed Nelson Cruz to a one-year deal. Cruz reached free agency just after he was implicated in the Biogenesis scandal and had to settle for a one-year deal. It was a great deal for both the Orioles and Cruz. He hit 40 home runs and was a big part of the team’s first AL East division crown since 1997. He went on to play nine more seasons until the age of 42.
