The Baltimore Orioles made a big change prior to the 2022 season in Camden Yards. The team decided to push the left field wall back about 26.5 feet before Opening Day in 2022. Fans and players of other teams voiced their frustrations since it was pushed back, and it even took home runs away from O’s players. After much consideration, the team decided to fix the dimensions to a more respectable level.
The wall remains at 333 feet starting at the left field foul pole, but there will be significant modifications as they head to center field. The deepest part of what’s known as “Mount Walltimore,” were 384 and 398 feet. O’s general manager Mike Elias announced the wall will be moved up to 374 and 376 feet. The height of the wall will also be altered, as it moves from 13 feet to eight in some areas and six feet, 11 inches in other areas.
Don’t worry fans, the seats will not be changed. The fan-favorite “Bird Bath” ran by Mr. Splash will remain in section 86 as well. Opposing teams will certainly hit more homers against the Birds, but right-handed hitters like Ryan Mountcastle will be happy with the move. Fans saw the O’s fly out to deep left field many times last year in what a home run in multiple other ballparks would be.
This wasn’t the move that fans were necessarily looking for as free agency has kicked off. However, Orioles fans are hopeful that the wall being moved in will reignite an offense that sputtered down the stretch in 2023 and 2024.
