Bowie Baysox pitcher Trey McGough was called up by the AAA Norfolk Tides Wednesday afternoon. The 26-year old has been a solid arm for the Baysox this season, striking out 24 with a 1.83 ERA over 19.2 innings pitched at the Double-A level. His WHIP with the Baysox is 0.81, and the opposing teams are hitting 0.183 against him.
The left-handed pitcher played for Mount St. Mary’s from 2017-2019 before being drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in round 24. In 2022, McGough was 1-0, striking out 13 and walking four. He missed the majority of the season with an injury. With the Pirates system, McGough was 10-6 overall with a 3.31 ERA in 163 ⅓ innings.
In December 2022, the Baltimore Orioles selected McGough in round 2 of the Rule Five Draft. McGough then played for the Orioles affiliate the FCL Orioles and the Delmarva Shorebirds before quickly moving on to the Baysox. In 2023 with the Baysox, he went 1-1, pitching 4 innings with a 4.50 ERA over two games. Overall in the Orioles minor league system, he has pitched 203.2 innings, going 11-8 with an ERA of 3.14.
The Tides play again tomorrow, May 23rd against the Worcester Red Sox. They are currently 24-23, and will look toward strong players like McGough to keep them over .500 as the season continues.
