On Sunday, it was announced that Samuel Basallo, the #2 prospect of the Baltimore Orioles, was promoted to the AAA Norfolk Tides. Basallo is the #11 prospect overall, according to MLBPipeline.com, and has been playing exceptionally well for AA Bowie this season. At just 19 years old, Basallo signed with the Orioles as an international free agent in 2021. Since then, he has blown through Balimore’s farm system, being an important all-around asset for each team.
In the 105 games Basallo has played with Bowie this season, he has slashed 287/.355/.457, collecting 22 doubles, 15 home runs, and 52 RBIs. He also was a participant in the 2024 MiLB Future’s Game.
Despite Samuel Basallo being a top prospect for the Orioles, there is a question of where he will play once he arrives in Baltimore. With Adley Rutschman and James McCann making up Baltimore’s dominant catching rotation, Basallo may have to find another role. He has experience at first base while with the Baysox, or he could also quit the field entirely and try his luck at a DH position. There was a question on whether or not the Orioles would use Basallo as part of a trade package before the 2024 deadline, but nothing was ever made official.
