The Baltimore Orioles starting rotation was already thin heading into 2024. Starting pitchers Kyle Bradish and John Means were on the injured list to start the season. Cole Irvin and Tyler Wells have been able to step up to the task, but the team will have to dig deeper in the depth chart. Baltimore placed Tyler Wells on the injured list with elbow inflammation on Tuesday.
The O’s placed Wells on the 15-day IL, so he might not be there for long. Wells was supposed to start in the series finale against Minnesota on Wednesday, but the team will have to find help elsewhere. It’s unclear if/who they will call up from the minors. It’s not very likely Baltimore uses someone in the bullpen to start, but it’s too early to tell. Note that the Orioles do have an off-day on Thursday, so the bullpen might not be a horrible idea.
Wells has been the third starter for the O’s so far this season. He has a record of 0-2 with a 5.87 ERA in three starts. He’s struggled to find his footing so far after having a strong first half in 2023. The depth of the Baltimore Orioles will be tested yet again.
