The Baltimore Orioles captured another AL East series win at Camden Yards against the Boston Red Sox improving their record to 35-19 on the season. This is the 18th straight series win against AL East opponents, the longest streak in team history. The O’s during this series proved they can put runs in many different ways. In game one of the series, the Orioles scored 11 runs without a home run. The Orioles have been powered by home runs this season, being second in the league with 79 in total. Despite a rough showing from Grayson Rodriguez in game two, the O’s bounced back in game three clinching the series win 6-1. Gunnar Henderson launched his second career grand slam behind a dominant performance from Corbin Burnes on the mound. The Orioles are 1.5 games back of the Yankees for first place in the division.
This is Why You Get Him
Even with Henderson’s league-tying home run, Corbin Burnes flat-out dominated the Red Sox lineup. Burnes tossed seven innings in game three, allowing one unearned run, and striking out five batters. He also threw a season-high 108 pitches and received a standing ovation from fans in support of his efforts. This performance shows why Mike Elias went out and got the former Cy Young winner. The presence of Burnes has also helped this pitching staff as the O’s have a team era of 3.33 which is the fifth lowest in MLB. With a legit ace front lining the Orioles’ pitching staff every five days, he will shove. Burnes has a 5-2 record with an ERA of 2.35 on the season.
He’s Too Good to Sit
There is so much talent sitting on the bench for the Orioles and Kyle Stowers proved that his bat can play at the MLB level. His talent was put on full display in game one’s victory as he went 3-4 driving in a career-high four RBIs. This performance forced manager Brandon Hyde to place him back in the lineup for game two where he went 1-2 with a single before being replaced by Ryan Mountcastle. The only downside to Stowers’ game is his outfield defense which could force him into some DH opportunities. Hyde has a very difficult job trying to balance this lineup but Stowers, has proven he deserves more chances. Through 19 plate appearances, Stowers has posted a batting average of .389. and an OPS of .924.
Back At It Again
The Orioles get a chance to rest with the off day on Thursday but will be right back at it against the Tampa Bay Ray when they arrive Friday for their three-game set. This will be the first time the O’s will face the Rays who have had an underwhelming season so far. The Rays are currently under .500 with a record of 27-29 and are looking like a team the Orioles should beat. The O’s look to extend their division series win streak to 19 with Suarez, Braddish, and Irvin set to toe the slab in the series and inch closer to the AL East division crown.
