The Baltimore Orioles have had a busy Monday so far. They picked up pitcher Corbin Martin earlier and recalled Kyle Stowers from AAA Norfolk. Another move has now been made, as Austin Hays is back from the IL. Baltimore also DFA’d OF Ryan McKenna for assignment to make room for Hays.
It’s been a struggle to start the season for Austin Hays. He’s batting just .111 with two RBIs and 11 strikeouts in 19 games so far. To make matters worse, a strained calf muscle had him placed on the IL a few weeks ago. He hasn’t produced like normal on offense, but the Orioles definitely missed his glove in the outfield. The O’s sent him to AA Bowie for a short rehab assignment where he excelled. Hays hit .357 with two home runs and three RBIs in five games with the Baysox. Although it is just AA ball, his success could give him confidence as he rejoins the major league club.
Ryan McKenna has also struggled like Hays in 2024. His batting average is a high .357, but he’s only had eight at bats in nine games. McKenna has showed off some surprising power with two home runs this season, but his defense just hasn’t cut it. He’s always had great speed, but he’s had drop problems at times and has a subpar throwing arm. McKenna will be a useful piece to any team that claims him, but the Orioles are in win-now mode and can’t afford that play.
