The Dodgers up up 1-0 after Freddie Freeman’s walk-off grand slam
The excitement of the 2024 postseason did not take a day off for game one of the World Series. What more can you ask for than extra-innings and a blown save on a walk-off grand slam from one of the game’s most successful and likeable players?
The Dodgers struck first last night with a sacrifice fly, then the Yankees took the lead back on yet another monster home run from Giancarlo Stanton. The veteran slugger has been on fire this October. He has 11 postseason hits and six of them are home runs.
Mookie Betts hit a game-tying sac fly in the eighth and the game went to extra innings where the Yankees eked out a single run on a ground out to take the lead. With two runners on for the Dodgers in the bottom of the 10th, Aaron Boone called on Nestor Cortes to face Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts, and Freddie Freeman. That’s a tough task for any pitcher, but Cortes had yet to pitch in the postseason and his last game was all the way back on September 18th. Woof.
Cortes retired Ohtani, walked Betts, and then Freeman needed just one pitch to send the Dodgers fans home happy. You hate to see it. Unless you’re me, in which case you love to see it.
Game 2: Yankees @ Dodgers, 8:08 EDT, FOX
Carlos Rodón gets the start for the Yankees, his fourth of the postseason. It’s been a mixed bag for Rodón so far but he has made the start in two wins for the Yankees, both against the Guardians in the ALCS.
For the Dodgers, it’s another big free agent signing from last offseason, Yoshinobu Yamamoto. A Yankees fan at my work last winter kept saying that the Yankees just needed to “trade for Soto, sign Yamamoto” and they’d be right back on top of the league. It was very annoying. It’s also annoying that the Yankees got right back on top of the league without Yamamoto but I would like to see him destroy the Yankees tonight.
