What is thought to be an absolute rebuilding mess, Jordan Poole with Tyus Jones are in Washington to build a future. Furthermore, Poole and Jones spark an exciting backcourt for Wizards Fans. More specifically, what makes this backcourt exciting?
Following the 2023 NBA Draft, the Wizards left a lot to be desired. Unfortunately, they were unable to stock up on draft picks as most rebuilding teams do. The trades of Kristaps Porzingis and Bradley Beal resulted in mainly second-round picks, plus Tyus Jones. While there is minimal help coming from their draft-class, we can at least look forward to their new backcourt duo.
Jordan Poole and Tyus Jones Form a New Duo in Washington
Strengths
Tyus Jones
Tyus is an excellent decision-maker. During the 2022-2023 season, he averaged 5.2 assists. More importantly, Jones only averaged 0.9 turnovers which gives trust that he will do that in Washington. He played 24.2 minutes as well and makes correct decisions in the right moments.
Tyus is a solid three-point shooter as well. He shot 37.1% from three and that was on a career-high 4.1 attempts. Spacing is critical in today’s NBA, and Tyus can shoot the ball well enough for that to happen. He also has shot 37% or better in the last two seasons he was in Memphis which bodes well for Washington.
Jordan Poole
Jordan Poole has improved his scoring each season. He is entering Washington off his best regular season in his young career. Averaging 20.4 points a game, Jordan gets a chance to expand his scoring abilities with the Wizards. Additionally, he brings an offensive punch that the Wizards need after the departures of Kristaps Porzingis and Bradley Beal.
Poole also has championship experience; he won the 2022 NBA Championship with the Warriors. Therefore, he comprehends the playoffs and was around players who win.
He is a three-level scorer, allowing the Wizards to have excitement from an offensive perspective.
Poole and Jones’ Fit
In a rebuilding mode for the Wizards, Tyus, and Jordan fit nicely into their plans. Tyus is more of a pass-first guard who makes little mistakes and gets the offense going efficiently. Poole is more about scoring and scoring quickly, allowing him to play more off-ball.
For the Wizards, both of these players are necessary for providing confidence in a successful future. The Wizards need excitement, so Poole’s scoring and Jones’ playmaking can start that excitement.
Last Word
This is a chance for Jones and Poole to create a new chapter in their careers. Jones can start consistently on a team, so Poole can be more comfortable being the leading scorer on a team. More importantly, Poole gets a fresh start because Jones is a stable force that can make it easy for Poole to transition into his role.
Washington is a rebuilding team, but Jordan Poole and Tyus Jones fit well together and can provide some hope for building an exciting future in Washington.
