Unrivaled is a startup 3-on-3 basketball league founded by WNBA stars Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier meant to serve as a domestic alternative to the common WNBA practice of playing overseas during the offseason. The league will consist of six teams all based in Miami for the first season, with plans to tour the United States in future seasons. 32 WNBA players have signed on out of 36 available slots, with a plethora of All-Stars such as Kelsey Plum, Chelsea Gray, Kahleah Copper, Brittney Griner and Angel Reese prepared to lace up.
Unrivaled boasts that its goal is to have players earn the highest average salary across all women’s sports leagues in the United States, with minimum salaries at least crossing the six-digit threshold. The high-profile list of investors includes basketball Hall-of-Famer Steve Nash, future Hall-of-Famer Carmelo Anthony, two-time FIFA World Cup champion Alex Morgan and even former Washington Wizard Tyus Jones.
Dolson, or “Big Mama Stef” in her player announcement, is the fourth Mystic to join Unrivaled, after Brittney Sykes, Shakira Austin and Aaliyah Edwards all signed on in the past couple of weeks. According to the league’s website, team rosters will be announced on Nov. 20, so it remains to be seen how the quartet will be distributed among the six teams.
Unrivaled tips off on Jan. 17 and will be broadcast on TNT and TruTV. The league will run for two months until the inaugural champion is crowned on Mar. 17.
