It’s win or wait until 2028 for Les Bleus! And congratulations to Germany and the Netherlands for winning the women’s and men’s 3×3 basketball gold medals yesterday!
Welcome to the Olympic quarterfinals in men’s basketball! Here’s a rundown on the teams that won the 3X3 medals and go from there!
3×3 women’s basketball medalists
We’ll play “Das Lied der Deutschen,” the national anthem of the gold medal winning team in women’s 3×3.
Herzlichen Glückwunsch an Deutschland zum Gewinn der Goldmedaille im 3×3-Frauenbasketball!
Congratulations to Germany for winning the gold medal in 3×3 women’s basketball! While the United States didn’t successfully defend their gold medal from 2020, it is a great achievement that the Americans came back to win a medal after an 0-3 start. So congratulations to Team USA as well.
- Gold: Germany (Deutschland)
- Silver (Silber): Spain (Spanien)
- Bronze: United States (Vereinigte Staaten)
3×3 men’s basketball medalists
Now we’ll play “Het Wilhelmus,” the national anthem of the gold medal winning team in men’s 3×3.
Gefeliciteerd Nederland met het winnen van de gouden medaille in het 3×3 mannenbasketbal! Dit is tevens de eerste medaille die de Benelux won in het basketbal.
Congratulations to the Netherlands for winning the gold medal in 3×3 men’s basketball! They were also the team to beat the USA Basketball men’s national 3X3 team to prevent the Americans from even making the elimination stage.
Here are all the medal winners!
- Gold (Goud): Netherlands (Nederland)
- Silver (Zilver): France (Frankrijk)
- Bronze (Brons): Lithuania (Litouwen)
The Dutch were one of the better teams heading into the Olympics, but they weren’t head, neck and shoulders above everyone else like let’s say … the USA 5X5 women supposedly do against everyone else. The American men in 3X3 had a shot too based on their talent and past results as well.
The Benelux has certainly been a geographic region in our conversations because of the Belgium women’s national basketball team. But the men’s basketball players north of Antwerp also wanted to let the world know that the fellas in this region of Europe can also more than hold their own on the court by winning the gold medal.
Yesterday’s men’s 3×3 championship was as good as it gets. The game went into overtime between France et Les Pays-Bas because no one hit 21 points in 10 minutes. Dutch player Worthy de Jong made this game winning shot to win the gold AFTER France struck first blood in overtime.

The Netherlands has had a great Olympics in general. They are ninth place in the medal count among all countries (they only have 18 million people while the USA has 333 million). And this 3×3 basketball gold medal isn’t the first one that they “stole.” The other would be the mixed 4X400 meter relay in athletics where sprinter and hurdler Femke Bol overcame an over 10 meter deficit to overtake Kaylyn Brown of the United States in their anchor legs of the final.
Woooow congrats Femke Bol and TeamNL pic.twitter.com/q6dyBr1oGt

The Dutch, or TeamNL, has a lot more chances to win medals before the end of de Olympische Spelen. The Netherlands will never overtake the United States, but they are definitely punching more above their weight than most of their European neighbors.
