The Wizards lost Tyus Jones in free agency and Poole has an opportunity to play more in this role.
Washington Wizards guard Jordan Poole is entering his second season in the nation’s capital after arriving here from the Golden State Warriors. He also has a chance to play in a position that the average fan doesn’t think of right away when they think about him: point guard.
The Wizards don’t have a true floor general point guard. And head coach Brian Keefe has given Poole the keys to the offense for this year.
Bijan Todd of Monumental Sports Network wrote a column earlier this week on Poole embracing his opportunity to play more at the point guard position. It’s something we should expect to see him play later today when the Wizards play the Toronto Raptors in Montreal.
Todd noted that Poole averaged 18.4 points and 5.5 assists per game when Keefe became the head coach, including a 12 game stretch when he was temporarily coming off the bench. It will be interesting to see if Poole can improve on these numbers, especially his assists, when the season comes around.
No one is expecting the Wizards to be a playoff contender. But if Poole can be an effective starting point guard this season, perhaps Washington will win more games than their franchise-low of 15 last season. Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
