The Washington Mystics guard will have a chance to win a medal!
The Australia women’s national basketball team won against Serbia, 85-67 on Wednesday in the 2024 Olympic quarterfinals in Paris, France.
With the exception of a very short Serbian lead of just 2 points, the Opals were in control from start to finish. They had a run as large as 17-0 and led by as many as 27 points in the third quarter.
With the exception of a turnover filled game (The Opals gave up 19 turnovers compared to Serbia with 17), this was pretty much a complete blowout in favor for Australia.
Washington Mystics guard Jade Melbourne scored 18 points in the game on 6-of—9 shooting while also playing 33 minutes. In addition, Alanna Smith led the Opals with 22 points and 13 rebounds, while Cayla George also scored 18 points. Notably, Lauren Jackson did not play today, but she is definitely in the twilight of her career.
For Serbia, Jovana Nogic led with 17 points.
The Opals will now head to the semifinals where they have a chance to earn a medal. You never know if that medal is gold, right? The will on Thursday against the winner of the United States vs. Nigeria game.
See you then mates!
