For the first time in 2024, the Mystics have won three consecutive game after a heroic late-game effort in Chicago
Recap
In a slog of a game, the Mystics pulled out their third-consecutive win against the Chicago Sky by a final score of 74-70. Chicago turned the ball enough to keep the Mystics offense working but made up for it with a big rebounding advantage. Washington’s hot three-point shooting got them a 10-point lead late in the first half. Chicago fought back until they could take the lead heading into the 4th quarter. During a back-and-forth final frame, Washington finally took the lead after an Aaliyah Edwards steal-and-score with 1:24 left. Brittney Sykes sealed the game with a rebound off a missed free throw with 3 seconds remaining.
Notes
- Brittney Sykes fell back down to Earth after two amazing performances. She posted just 2 points in the first 35 minutes or so of the game. It was a far cry from the combined 48 points she’s had in the team’s past two victories. But she rallied late to push the Mystics to the win. She got fouled multiple times, scored a huge basket off a great dish by Stef Dolson with a minute left, and got the rebound mentioned above.
- Stef Dolson had a “revenge” game against the team she won a title with. She put up 17 points on 12 shots. Unlike past scoring outbursts, Dolson did her damage inside the arc as she only hit one three. She operated in the high post and schooled Chicago’s young bigs with dribble drives and dimes.
- Chicago had a plus-11 rebound advantage, which was larger earlier in the game. Both Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso ended up with double-digit rebound totals. But they couldn’t finish around the rim as effectively. Cardoso only put up four attempts while Reese went 3-of-10 from the field.
What’s next
The Mystics come back home to face Connecticut on Saturday. The game is at 3:00 pm and you can catch it on Monumental or WNBA League Pass. Connecticut is 2nd in the WNBA standings, but have faced tough games against Washington this year.
