The Washington Wizards’ and Mystics’ controlling partner acknowledged that in an interview on MoCo 360
Monumental Sports & Entertainment CEO Ted Leonsis already has controlling interests in multiple teams within his empire. He has controlling interest over the Washington Mystics for nearly 20 years and has the same for the Wizards for nearly 15.
And he’s not done yet.
In an interview with MIke Unger of MoCo 360, Leonsis detailed his biography, where he was doing odd jobs as a child mowing lawns to what’s on his mind with Monumental Sports today. One of more the most interesting quotes was his answer to whether Leonsis wanted to buy the Washington Nationals. This is just one — and the only snippet — I will show
I have high interest in consolidating sports teams in our region. It can include the Nationals. It can include D.C. United. The media landscape has changed dramatically over the last five years. And media is a major revenue driver for teams and leagues.
Leonsis also went on to add that he doesn’t want to buy a team simply to add more programming to Monumental Sports Network. It’s about having teams, treating players well and leveraging them on media platforms which make those teams (and the media( big businesses. He used Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin as an example of a player who helped turn the Washington area into a hockey market.
I encourage you to read the whole piece and I found it a great read. Sound off in the comments below.
