It’s early to say whether Washington should panic. But now, the clock is truly ticking.
Last Sunday, the Washington Mystics received the No. 4 selection in the 2025 WNBA Draft. In addition, they also hold the No. 6 pick from the Atlanta Dream, the No. 23 pick which was from the Connecticut Sun, and the No. 32 pick which was originally from the Phoenix Mercury.
Now that the top of the draft order has been decided, it gives Monumental Basketball President Michael Winger clarity on how to proceed with the Mystics’ future, and whom he should hire as the team’s next General Manager.
And that clock is now ticking.
As of today, the Mystics are the only WNBA team without a General Manager and a Head Coach. Yes, the Dallas Wings are looking for a Head Coach. And though the Minnesota Lynx and Las Vegas Aces have General Manager vacancies, they are WNBA title contenders. The Mystics aren’t.
And that gives cause for pause. Not panic — we aren’t there yet. Just cause for pause.
The pause is because no other team is in the Mystics’ situation with vacancies. The good news is that Washington now has clarity in terms of which picks they have. And that will give prospective general managers a better opportunity to determine what pieces they could work with when they rebuild this roster.
