The Washington Wizards are preparing to relocate from downtown Washington D.C. to northern Virginia approximately seven miles away from their current location.
Ted Leonsis, owner of the Wizards and the Washington Capitals is expected to make the announcement on Wednesday.
Virginia state lawmakers voted Monday to approve the arena project in northern Virginia, the Washington Post reported. A final vote of the state’s full general assembly is needed to pass the project, which would create an 8,000-square-foot campus site in Alexandria.
The Wizards can exit the Capital One Arena lease in 2027 and begin playing in the new arena by 2028.
