Washington Capitals Captain and legendary player Alex Ovechkin scored his 895th goal today against the New York Islanders, breaking Wayne Gretsky’s NHL record of 894. Ovechkin scored on a power play, from his office assisted by Tom Wilson and Dylan Strome.
The game was stopped for an on ice ceremony that included Ovechkin’s teammates, Wayne Gretsky, Capitals ownership, the NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, Ovechkin’s family and past teammates.
The game itself was lackluster for the Capitals who lost 4 to 1 to the New York Islanders but that was just a side story to the great chase. The Capitals have a comfortable lead in the Metropolitan Division and the Islanders are on the outside looking in at the playoffs.
Ovechkin has had an incredible career and would have likely broken Gretsky’s record much early if not for almost two seasons of lost hockey. Ovechkin’s true rookie season was an NHL lockout year. In 2012-2013, the NHL had another lockout and only played 48 games, Ovechkin scored 33 goals in that 48 games. Then in 2020-2021 Covid happen again shortening the NHL season.
Ovechkin has been great on an off the ice for the entire NHL and has some of the greatest goals ever scored. It has truly been special watching Ovechkin his entire career. The next milestone for Ovie is 900 goals, obviously a number no player has reached.
