Today, December, 13th, Virginia Govenor, Glenn Youngkin and Wizard and Capitals owner Ted Leonsis, met to display a plan they had to move the two teams to Potomac Yard in Alexandria. It is reported that ground could break as early as 2025 with the teams moving as early as 2028. This has gotten votes from the Virginia state lawmakers, however, a final vote of the states full general assembly is needed in order to go forward with the project.
If Leonsis wants to leave Capital One Arena, he could do so as early as 2027, if he was to buy out the contract for a substantial amount of money. While this isn’t finalized, DC mayor, Muriel Bowser offered a bill giving 500 million in renovations and modernization of the arena. While this bill is a good chunk of the money, Leonsis wants, its still 100 million less than he was asking.
DC officials want to work with Ted, in order to keep the teams in DC.
