Halpern has a history with the Caps, as he played for the club from 2000-04 and had a second stint in the 2011-12 season. He was one of the main candidates in the Detroit Red Wings search. However, general manager Steve Yzerman went with Derek LaLonde. Carbery is also familiar with the organization due to him coaching the AHL Hershey Bears. Hershey is the AHL affiliate of the Washington Capitals. The 41-year-old went to the Leafs to help assist head coach Sheldon Keefe.
Who Could be the Next Washington Capitals Coach?
Both names are two of the more respected assistants in the league. Halpern has been in the mix for a number of jobs and will get a chance sooner rather than later. Carbery reportedly got an interview with the Ducks, so he may get a job down the line.
The Caps are looking to replace Peter Laviolette behind the bench, but aren’t devoid of talent. Washington still has Alex Ovechkin and a number of talented players. A few adjustments and a new voice could lead the team back into the post-season.
