Tom Wilson has a new contract. The 29 year old winger has finalized a new deal with the Washington Capitals. He will remain in the Nations Capital for the next seven years and has an AAV of $6.8 million. This is a good deal for the player and the team moving forward.

Wilson Signs New Contract With Capitals
While Alexander Ovechkin is in the fold, this team will be competitive and chase a championship. That is why the Tom Wilson contract is perfect. Last season was unfortunate for the team, as many players were on the injured reserve list for the majority of the year. One of those players was Tom Wilson and he suffered an ACL injury. The team missed his scoring ability and his physical presence as they fell short of qualifying for the playoffs. It will be a new season and turning the page is a must.
What This Contract Means
For the Player
Wilson is an excellent player and a complimentary piece to the lineup. He is a big-body forward that plays physically and is never afraid to deliver a bone-crushing body check. In addition, he is a guy who can slot in on the power play and in other situations. He may not be Ovechkin, but he does have scoring ability and is able to finish.

Wilson was a good player once he returned from injury. He went on to score 13 goals and 22 points in 33 games. Furthermore, he scored 2.5 goals above expected. His presence was huge but it was just too little too late, but was comforting to see in his return. Now that Wilson is locked in for the long haul, he can focus on the game and helping the team capture another championship with their captain in the fold.
For the Team
With management signing Wilson, all signs point to this team being competitive and not going into a rebuild. While Ovechkin is playing at a high level, the team will be in the thick of things. Despite a disappointing season, Washington has the tools to be good and better than last season.
This core group still has Nicklas Backstrom, Ovechkin, TJ Oshie, Dylan Strome, John Carlson, Darcy Kuemper, and Wilson. As long as the season isn’t riddled with injury, they should be able to compete in a gauntlet of a division. Overall this is great for both sides as things move forward.
