No one should try to rob Sleepy’s samurai artifacts
Fans of your Georgetown Hoyas need to prepare themselves to hear the name “Sleepy Floyd” more often this spring. A new action-comedy film titled ‘Freaky Tales’ is coming to theaters in April, and it features the familiar name with a surprising twist. The movie, which premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, stars Pedro Pascal of “Mandalorian” and “The Last of Us” fame and is directed by Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden, the duo behind “Captain Marvel.” The heist movie boasts an ensemble cast that includes the late Angus Cloud, Ben Mendelsohn, and Jay Ellis, along with cameos from Tom Hanks and Oakland’s own Too $hort and Marshawn Lynch. But what has Georgetown and Warriors fans buzzing is the appearance of Ellis portraying none other than Hoya basketball legend, Sleepy Floyd.
Everyone should know that Sleepy Floyd had a legendary career on the Hilltop. Eric “Sleepy” Floyd graced the court at Georgetown from 1979 to 1982, leaving an indelible mark on the program.
With an impressive 2,304 NCAA career points, Floyd holds the record for most points scored in Georgetown men’s basketball history. He led the team in scoring all four years he played, averaging over 17 points per game. His accolades include three All-Big East honors and two All-American honors. He could do everything.
This is not getting enough coverage in Georgetown circles.. Sleepy Floyd and a samurai sword, count me in #hoyasaxa

Floyd’s senior year was particularly memorable, as he and teammate Patrick Ewing led the Hoyas to the National Championship game, where they narrowly lost to some team.

Beyond the impressive stats, Floyd was known for his dangerous outside shooting, accuracy at the free-throw line, and his ability to take over a game with his talent and athleticism. He was a true team player and a force to be reckoned with on the court, always ready to step up and lead the Hoyas to victory.
Sleepy’s NBA Career
After graduating from Georgetown in 1982, Floyd was drafted by the New Jersey Nets. He was later traded to the Golden State Warriors, where his NBA career took off.
Floyd averaged 15 or more points per game in six of his seven seasons with the Warriors. In 1987, he earned a spot on the NBA All-Star team.
One of his most memorable NBA moments came during the 1987 playoffs against the Los Angeles Lakers. Floyd set an NBA playoff record by scoring 29 points in a quarter and 39 points in a half, ultimately finishing the game with 51 points. This incredible performance showcased his scoring prowess and cemented his place in NBA history.
He later played for the Houston Rockets and the San Antonio Spurs before returning to the Nets and retiring in 1995.
Sleepy Floyd: The Movie
Now, back to “Freaky Tales.” The movie trailer offers a glimpse of Jay Ellis as Sleepy Floyd, wielding a samurai sword. This unexpected image has sparked curiosity among Hoya fans. Was Sleepy Floyd a secret samurai enthusiast in real life? Probably.

The depicted 1987 Bay Area looks “hella freaky.” After hours scouring research, there’s no evidence to suggest that Floyd had a particular interest in swords or martial arts, the movie seems to be taking some creative liberties with his character by introducing this element. In the film, Clint (played by Pedro Pascal) and his team are tasked with stealing ancient Asian artifacts from Floyd’s house, leading to a confrontation where Floyd displays impressive samurai sword skills. Don’t mess with Sleepy.
This portrayal presents an interesting contrast to Floyd’s real-life persona. He was known for his calm demeanor and team-oriented approach on the court, which differs significantly from the action-anti-hero image presented in the movie clips. This contrast highlights the exciting nature of the film and adds an intriguing layer to the story.
Fact, Fiction, and Hoyas
‘Freaky Tales’ is described as a “multi-track mixtape of colorful characters” set in Oakland, California, in 1987. While the movie incorporates real-life figures like Sleepy Floyd, it appears to be a fictional narrative that blends action, comedy, and perhaps a touch of the absurd.
For Georgetown fans, ‘Freaky Tales’ is a chance to celebrate a legendary Hoya and see him in a new light on the big screen. The movie’s unique portrayal of Floyd might even spark renewed interest in his real-life achievements and inspire a new generation of Hoyas fans.
