While the veteran St. John’s team has been the story of the Big East this season, the conference has not been short of star-studded freshmen talent, and at the very top of that list are UConn’s Liam McNeeley and Georgetown’s Thomas Sorber.
The two freshmen have won seven Big East Freshman of the Week honors apiece after the award was given to McNeeley this week, and both players are deserving of the Big East Freshman of the Year award that is to be announced next week.
The 6-foot-7 McNeeley won the Freshman of the Week award with a pair of UConn victories, in which he averaged 15.5 points, 3.5 assists, and 3 rebounds per game. On the season, the forward is averaging 15 points, 6 rebounds, and 2.5 assists.
The 6-10 Sorber was also having a tremendous season for Georgetown before sustaining a season-ending injury that required him to undergo foot surgery. The forward averaged 14.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 2.4 assists.
Both freshmen are expected to at least test the NBA Draft waters after this season, with Sorber expected to make a decision after getting NBA feedback. Tankathon is projecting McNeeley and Sorber to be picked as the No. 11 and 18 picks respectively in this year’s NBA Draft.
