This letter is in response to Dan Rodricks’ recent column regarding the five members of the Harford County Board of Education voting to scrap the AP African American Studies course (“Dan Rodricks: A tweak to the history of redlining in Baltimore and other cities,” July 11).
To me, this is just another example of the current ongoing trend to whitewash African American history so as not to offend. All students regardless of their race need to know the full extent of slavery, Jim Crow, redlining, the numerous black massacres of thriving black communities and discrimination. Are they afraid if their white children learn the real truth about America’s past concerning minorities, they will see their own history in a new unflattering light?
Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it. Stop trying to hide the truth!
