Maryland women’s soccer plays its penultimate match of the 2024 season on Sunday in Madison, Wisconsin.
The Terps will face the Wisconsin Badgers, who are fighting to keep their Big Ten Tournament hopes alive.
Sunday’s match will begin at 1 p.m. and stream on Big Ten Plus.
Wisconsin Badgers (7-4-4, 3-3-3 Big Ten)
Paula Wilkins is one of the most decorated head coaches in the country, and is about to complete her 18th season at the helm of the Badgers’ program. She has 16 NCAA tournament berths, 312 career coaching wins and ranks second in conference history with eight regular season titles.
Wisconsin heads into Sunday’s match in a tight battle for Big Ten Tournament qualification. The Badgers currently sit in 10th in the Big Ten standings.
Wisconsin comes off a 2-0 loss to No. 21 Michigan State on Thursday. Wisconsin’s Big Ten wins came against Minnesota, then-No. 9 Iowa and Indiana, while its Big Ten losses came against Rutgers, then-No. 24 USC and Michigan State. The conference draws were with Illinois, UCLA and Nebraska.
Players to watch
Aryssa Mahrt, graduate student midfielder/forward, No. 19 — Mahrt has scored nine goals and two assists this season. She has also taken 50 shots, 34 of which have been on target. In 2023, she posted five goals and seven.
Ashley Martinez, senior midfielder/defender, No. 23 — Martinez has a goal and four assists this year. She’s totaled 32 shots and 13 shots on goal. Last season, she tallied three goals and three assists.
Drew Stover, junior goalkeeper, No. 1 — This is Stover’s first season as Wisconsin’s starter. She has made 46 saves and allowed 15 goals in 15 starts this season.
Strength
Corners. Wisconsin has the fifth-most corners in the Big Ten this season with 93.
Weakness
Shots. Wisconsin has the third-fewest shots in the Big Ten this season with 177, more than only Maryland and Purdue.
Three things to watch
1. Two more. In what has been a very difficult season, Maryland women’s soccer looks to finish off its campaign on the right track with two matches against Wisconsin and Rutgers.
2. Looking for a first. Maryland is 0-6-2 all time against Wisconsin and has yet to earn a win against the Badgers; the Terps have an opportunity to do so Sunday.
3. Big Ten Tournament battle. Maryland’s final three opponents in the regular season are fighting for Big Ten Tournament qualification. The Terps are not in the race for any postseason play, but they could play spoiler.
