Sellers slipped out of the first round.
Maryland women’s basketball guard Shyanne Sellers was selected with the 17th overall pick by the Golden State Valkyries in the 2025 WNBA Draft Monday night.
“It’s a sense of relief, it’s a sense of joy, a sense of gratitude,” Sellers said. “I’m glad Golden State was the one to give a kid a chance.”
Headed into the draft, Sellers was a projected first-round pick. She fell further than expected, but was finally selected with the fifth pick in the second round.
The Valkyries begin its first season in the WNBA in 2025, as Sellers joins former Terp Chloe Bibby, who she was teammates with in 2021-22.
“I’m super excited to be part of the new team. I know we’re gonna be ready to compete. We’re gonna be ready to win,” Sellers said. “I’m super excited to get to play with Chloe Bibby again.”
As of Monday, eight former Maryland players are in the WNBA.
The 6-foot-2 guard is the 23rd Maryland player to be selected in the WNBA Draft. She is also the 17th player to be drafted into the WNBA under head coach Brenda Frese.
Sellers is the first Maryland player to be selected in the WNBA Draft since Abby Meyers and Diamond Miller were selected in 2023.
In her four years at College Park, Sellers played 130 games and averaged 12.9 points, 4.6 rebounds and four assists per game.
“I’m able to swing to multiple positions, so whatever coach needs me to play, I can play that, and I want to execute it at a high level,” Sellers said.
She earned All-Big Ten first-team honors in each of the last three seasons. She was named to the All-Big Ten defensive team in 2023 and the All-Big Ten freshman team in 2022. That year, she also won the Big Ten Sixth Player of the Year award.
This past season, she became the first player in program history to record 1,500 points, 500 rebounds and 500 assists.
“Can’t do it alone. It takes a village,” Sellers said. “I’ve been surrounded by great teammates my entire career, so I’m super grateful for that, and I’m excited to build on that.”
