Carroll County sheriff’s deputies arrested a Sykesville man Wednesday and charged him with eight counts of possession and eight counts of distribution of child pornography, according to a police news release.
Liam Ranario Greeley, 28, is being held without bail at the Carroll County Detention Center after an initial court appearance. According to court records, his next hearing is on Oct. 31.
The Carroll County Advocacy and Investigation Unit launched an investigation in August into child pornography posted online. During the investigation, detectives found evidence of distribution, according to the release, and on Wednesday executed a search warrant on Greeley’s home. During the search, police seized electronic devices for further forensic analysis, according to the release.
The Carroll County Advocacy and Investigation Unit coordinated with the Maryland Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force on the investigation. The Carroll County Crisis Response Team, a unit trained to de-escalate mental health crises, also assisted in serving the search warrant, according to the release.
In Maryland, those found guilty of distributing child pornography are required to register as Tier II sex offenders. Maryland classifies sex offenders in three tiers. Tier I sex offenders, including those who are found guilty of possessing child pornography, are required to register with the state every several months for 15 years. Tier II offenders must register for 25 years and those who commit Tier III sex offenses will remain on Maryland’s registry for life.
Last month, the unit arrested and charged a Hampstead man with 10 counts of possession and 10 counts of distribution of child pornography.
