On this week’s episode of the Under the Shell Podcast, hosts Brendan Weissel, Sam Jane and Michael Howes are joined by former Maryland men’s basketball head coach Gary Williams.
Williams led the Terps to their lone national championship in 2002. He was inducted into the National Basketball Hall of Fame in 2014 after winning more than 600 games in his career at four different universities.
He discussed the Terps’ season-opening win over Manhattan and Derik Queen’s 22-point, 20-rebound performance in his collegiate debut. Williams also recapped the performances of Ja’Kobi Gillispie and Rodney Rice in Monday’s game.
“Derik Queen is unique because he’s that 6-foot-10 size, it’s kind of the new breed of player that’s very comfortable playing on a 3-point line,” Williams said. “He’s got a lot of things that make him a complete player, which is unusual for a guy at his age. He’s young, he’s a freshman, and yet he plays at a much more mature level.”
