On this week’s episode of the Under the Shell Podcast, hosts Brendan Weissel, Sam Jane and Michael Howes are joined by former Maryland men’s basketball player James Gist.
Gist played for the Terps from 2004-2008 under former head coach Gary Williams — scoring over 1,000 points and earning multiple All-ACC honors. The 38-year-old recently retired from a 16-year career playing overseas.
He spoke of his aspirations to become a coach, recently getting involved in the Pro-Fit Basketball Training camp. He also discussed Buzz Williams’ hiring as head coach at Maryland and how the aura of the program feels different since the Gary Williams era.
“The times that I have been home to see the games and everything, it has been a different vibe,” Gist said. “From a fan standpoint, with the students filling out the section. I’m just used to Xfinity Center having like 17,000 every game.”
“It feels like a long time since Gary left,” he added. “It’s like we kind of moved away from bringing the alumni back in.”
The hosts also discussed Williams’ and Brenda Frese’s recent transfer portal additions to their teams, baseball’s recent skid and mixed results from the lacrosse teams.
