Kevin Willard and Maryland have a first portal pickup of the offseason with Virginia Tech transfer guard Rodney Rice choosing the Terrapins on Sunday.
The 6-foot-4, 195-pound guard from DeMatha Catholic (MD), stepped away from the Virginia Tech program in October and is now heading back to his home state.
“I chose Maryland because I feel like I can be myself on the court and the way coach Willard plays his guards, my full game will unleash,” Rice said to On3. “It’s great to be back home as well playing in front of friends and family. I’ve always wanted to be a Terp since watching the Melo Trimble and Ant Cowan days so I’m glad I’m being able to fulfill that.”
Rice was originally a four-star recruit out of the class of 2022. He was ranked the No. 73 overall player and No. 3 player in the state of Maryland by 247Sports. Rice has only appeared in eight games as a college player, all coming in 2022-23 with Virginia Tech. In those eight games, Rice averaged 7.4 points and 3.3 rebounds per game in 19.9 minutes.
