The Baltimore Ravens have traded for cornerback Tre’Davious White.
According to multiple reports, the Baltimore Ravens have traded for Los Angeles Rams cornerback Tre’Davious White.
Tre’Davious White stats
The 29-year-old joins the Ravens as an immediate upgrade over the other depth players at the position after the top three and brings both experience and proven pedigree to the table as well. Ravens fans are likely familiar with him as he was drafted in the first round pick of the Buffalo Bills in the 2017 NFL Draft. He was one of several cornerbacks linked to them during that pre-draft cycle and in three games against them since coming into the league, he recorded 10 total tackles including seven solos and one for a loss and pass breakup.
White comes to Charm City with a wealth of starting experience and playmaking ability. He is a two-time Pro Bowler and former First Team All Pro selection who has started all 86 games he has appeared in and compiled 18 interceptions, 70 pass breakups, five forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries, three sacks, 12 tackles for loss and six quarterback hits.
In 2019 was White All Pro season in which he led the league with a career-high six interceptions and reached personal best in forced fumbles (two) and tackles for loss (four) and record the second-most pass breakups of his career with 17.
What was the trade compensation for Tre’Davious White?
According to reports, the Ravens sent their 2026 seventh-round pick to the Rams in exchange for White and their 2027 seventh-round pick. The value, as it stands, is exceptional considering it they get an experienced depth piece that could help them make a run at a Super Bowl this season for swapping late round picks in future years.
Why did Tre’Davious White make sense to trade for the Ravens?
The Ravens came into this season with what many believed to be one of the deepest cornerback depth charts in the league after adding a pair of talented rookies to a group that included three-time Pro Bowler Marlon Humphrey and 2023 breakout stud Brandon Stephens. Unfortunately, injuries and inconsistent play have resulted in this group being a key contributor in the Ravens pass defense ranking last in the league in total yards and yard per game.
Adding White gives them another proven quality asset at a position where the front office and coaching staff believes they can never have enough of given how ravaged it can and has gotten during the season already this year. Not having Humphrey and first-round rookie Nate Wiggins available due to injury and illness cost the Ravens dearly in their Week 8 upset loss to the Cleveland Browns.
How does the Tre’Davious White trade impact the Ravens’ roster?
The move means that the Ravens aren’t stuck having to turn to third-year pro Jalyn Armour-Davis who has struggled when called up to play a larger as a result of injuries. White could join the rotation at outside cornerback opposite of Stephens while Humphrey and Wiggins continue to work their way to full health and potentially start if any of the top three had to miss time at any point down the stretch.
In a corresponding move to make room on the 53-man roster, the Ravens have waived undrafted rookie running back Chris Collier to make room for White.
How soon can Tre’Davious White contribute to the Ravens?
After being acquired on Tuesday and with the Ravens playing the Cincinnati Bengals on short week in primetime on Thursday Night Football, White will likely be in street clothes watching from the sidelines while the team takes on their heated division rivals. However, it also means that he’ll have mini-bye and 10-day break before the Ravens play their next game against their AFC North archrival Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 11. While it’s highly unlikely, if he does surprisingly suit up on Thursday, it will likely only be to play on special teams and provide emergency depth at corner since he still needs to learn the playbook and build chemistry with his new teammates.
How many teams has Tre’Davious White been on before joining the Baltimore Ravens?
This will mark just the third team White has joined in his seven-year career. He signed with the Rams on a one-year deal in the early stage of free agency back on March 26, 2024 just 20 days after being released by the Bills.
How does the Tre’Davious White trade impact the Baltimore Ravens’ salary cap?
According to salary cap expert Brian McFarland of Russel Street Report, White has $750,000 in salary and $470,588 in per game roster bonuses left on his contract which means his cap number for the remainder of the season will be $1,220,588 unless the Rams agree to take on some of the financial burden. This is another example of general manager Eric DeCosta acquiring a useful player at a very affordable price as the Ravens currently have just $3.7 million in available cap space prior to making this move, according to OverTheCap.
What is the precedent for a Baltimore Ravens deadline trade?
This is the fifth in-season trade made by DeCosta in the past six seasons sinc taking over as the head of the organzation’s front office. In 2019, he traded for cornerback Marcus Peters. In 2020, they traded for defensive end Yannick Ngakoue. Two years later, they traded for linebacker Roquan Smith ahead of the 2022 deadline. Just last week, he traded for wide receiver Diontae Johsnon.
Along with these trades, the Ravens also attempted to trade for cornerback Xavien Howard in 2021 and had a deal in place for Henry in 2023.
