The Baltimore Ravens could be looking for a new offensive coordinator in a few weeks, as Todd Monken has secured several head coaching interviews over the past week or two. Taking over for the ineffective Greg Roman, Monken’s creative offensive scheme paved the way for Lamar Jackson to win the MVP award in 2023 and earn First-Team All-Pro honors in 2024. Every team is looking for their next great offensive mind, which means a coach like Monken should be in high demand.
As of this posting, six teams are still looking for their next head coach. If Monken earns one of those opportunities, the Ravens must find another coach capable of getting the most out of Jackson and this talented cast of playmakers. In a recent article, Glenn Erby of Ravens Wire named Kansas City Chiefs quarterbacks coach David Girardi as a potential replacement.
Ravens Could Hire Chiefs Coach To Replace Todd Monken
It’s difficult to accurately evaluate what David Girardi brings to the table as an offensive mind. A former collegiate quarterback, the Geneva product first joined the Kansas City Chiefs as an offensive quality control coach in the 2018 season. Serving in that role for three seasons, he earned a promotion to assistant quarterbacks coach in 2021 and became the full-time quarterbacks coach in 2023.
While he has never called plays at the professional or collegiate level, his ability to climb the ladder under one of the game’s finest offensive minds suggests he knows what he’s doing. While it’s easy to look smart when Patrick Mahomes is your quarterback, Andy Reid has a long history of developing coaches who can thrive outside of his shadow. While none have ever captured his greatness, coaches like Doug Pederson, Sean McDermott, and even current Ravens head coach John Harbaugh can trace their roots back to Reid.
Of course, this assumes that Todd Monken leaves the Ravens. While the offensive coordinator will depart if someone offers him a head coaching position, the Ravens would prefer to keep him around for another season. Given the current NFL landscape, what are the odds Monken leaves for greener pastures?
The Coaching Landscape
As mentioned earlier, the Jacksonville Jaguars, Las Vegas Raiders, New Orleans Saints, Chicago Bears, Dallas Cowboys, and New York Jets are still looking for their next head coach. The New England Patriots already hired old friend Mike Vrabel, but the rest of the teams don’t appear to have a clear frontrunner. Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson is the top candidate on the board, but Monken is firmly in the second tier of candidates with guys like Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn and Buccaneers offensive coordinator Liam Coen.
Monken has only interviewed with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Chicago Bears as of this posting, but he should receive more interest after the divisional round. Based on what he did with the Ravens, teams with young, high-upside quarterbacks should be interested in what Todd Monken brings to the table. This makes him an ideal fit for the Bears, as first-overall pick Caleb Williams showed promise as a rookie but has work to do to surpass fellow 2024 draftees Jayden Daniels and Drake Maye. If he doesn’t land there, then he could help Dak Prescott bounce back from a disappointing and injury-riddled 2024.
