The Ravens and Chargers may disrupt Steven Nelson going to the Chiefs for a visit on Monday. According to multiple reports, the veteran is looking to make an NFL comeback, and he could do that this upcoming week by signing with the Chiefs for a second stint. Originally selected in the third round of the 2015 NFL Draft, the cornerback spent the beginning of his career with the Chiefs but things didn’t work out for him despite being a starter in 2016 and 2018. After losing Jaylen Watson to an injury earlier this season, the Kansas City Chiefs have been struggling to find a viable full-time opposition for Trent McDuffie.
However, they could bring back Nelson who retired this past offseason after playing nine seasons in the league. It shouldn’t surprise anyone that the Chiefs are looking to sign him despite having several available free agents like Xavien Howard but they’re looking to add some familiarity. Kansas City fans might not be happy with this move but it’s probably something the Chiefs may strike a deal with to see if he has any tank left in his system. They don’t need him to be a full-time starter but it would be beneficial for Andy Reid after benching Nazeeh Johnson in favor of Joshua Williams.
Some have to remember this the same blueprint they followed when signing Kareem Hunt to hold stomping grounds for Isiah Pacheco while recovering from injury. It might work out again for the team’s defense. However, it shouldn’t be too long before the Nelson starts garnering interest from other NFL needy teams looking to bolster their secondaries.
Ravens, Chargers May Disrupt Steven Nelson Chiefs Visit
Helping Baltimore’s Defense
The Baltimore Ravens could have easily been a solid AFC Championship team but after losing several winnable games, they look like a roster that could be a first-round exit. After signing Derrick Henry, the team had plenty of things going right for them on their offense while Lamar Jackson was continuing to play at his peak. It hasn’t been intact for the team’s defense that’s been struggling to stop opposing offenses from scoring multiple points. The Ravens can’t afford games to go through shootouts all the time but the defense has been shredding apart despite the talent they have.
Marlon Humphrey is still playing like a MVP but Brandon Stephens struggled to replicate that same energy. It didn’t help when Ravens brought Eddie Jackson into the secondary to cause distractions but later was released. They traded for Tre’Davious White but with Arthur Maulet heading to IR, they could use some extra depth. Nelson won’t be playing like himself but he could be a viable threat in the secondary to cause some frustrations for the opposing quarterback.
Wild Card Chargers
Meanwhile, the Chargers are getting better each week despite falling to the Ravens a few weeks ago which they could easily seek revenge this upcoming postseason. However, Los Angeles made several changes this offseason, including bringing in Jim Harbaugh and Jesse Minter to take over as defensive coordinator. The Chargers find themselves having one of the best pass defenses in the league. After signing Marcus Maye to fill for Alohi Gilman, the team could easily bring in Nelson to add some extra cushioning behind Derwin James.
Tarheeb Still is playing his best football but he doesn’t have any experience that the Chargers are looking for if they want to win a Super Bowl in February. Nelson’s veteran status could set the team apart, especially as a solid help for Kristian Fulton who has shown a few inconsistencies. It shouldn’t surprise anyone if tonight’s Chargers, Chiefs matchup will determine how interested Nelson will be.
