The Baltimore Ravens wrapped up the preseason on Saturday afternoon as they fell to the Green Bay Packers by a final of 30-7, to finish the preseason with a 1-2 record.
The Ravens traveled to Green Bay earlier in the week for two-days of joint practices with the Packers that gave many of the Ravens starters important reps against another team, something many have yet to do this preseason.
As for the game, it was the last chance for several Ravens to stake their claim for why the deserve to be on this team in 2024. Quarterback Josh Johnson got the start once again for the Ravens and had a respectable day finishing 5-for-7 for 71 yards. Johnson would find wide receiver Tylan Wallace for a 48-yard touchdown, the Ravens only touchdown of the day.
Fellow rookie quarterback Devin Leary struggled this preseason, and that struggle carried over to Saturday. Leary played most of the game after replacing Johnson, finishing the afternoon 6-for-13 for just 34 yards, and throwing two interceptions. Leary was also stripped sacked in the second quarter that lead to a Packers touchdown. With Leary’s struggles he has likely played his way out of the backup role behind start Lamar Jackson.
While the passing game was subpar, the Ravens rushing attack also struggles to get much going. Chris Collier led all Ravens with 42 rushing yards on 13 carries, while running back John Kelly Jr. had 31 carries on eight carries.
It was a tough day all around for the Ravens not just offensively, but also defensively. The Ravens defense was gashed most of the day on the ground as they allowed nearly 200 rushing yards.
There were some positives however mostly coming from the defensive side of the ball. Linebacker Trenton Simpson showed why he will be a key piece alongside Roquan Smith. Simpson who played in all three preseason games had six total tackles, one quarterback hit, one pass deflection, and a key interception in the red zone to stop a promising Packers drive.
The other defensive bright spot on Saturday was from undrafted rookie safety Beau Brade. The Maryland Terrapin product has made a name for himself this preseason and likely had his best game on Saturday. Brade finished the day with eight total tackles, a team high. Brade has some tough competition to beat out to make the Ravens final 53-man roster in the secondary, but he certainly made the most of his opportunities this preseason.
The Ravens suffered several injuries on Saturday as linebacker Yvandy Rigby went down with an injury late in the game, but did return. Center Nick Samac went down with what appeared to be an ankle injury and was taken back to the locker room on a cart, and did not return. The most devastating injury of the day was to running back Owen Wright. Wright, who was fighting to make the final roster as the third running back, went down with a broken foot that will now sideline him for a long period of time.
The Ravens now shift their focus to the regular season as they cut down to their final 53-man roster ahead of Tuesdays deadline, before getting set to take on the defending Super Bowl Champions in week one.
