Injury updates
The Washington Commanders held their second, and last, full practice of the week today due to the Christmas holiday on Wednesday. The team only held a walkthrough on Tuesday, but several knew injuries showed up following the win over the Eagles last Sunday.
Washington ruled out 5 players for this Sunday night’s home game against the Atlanta Falcons. Three of those were due to hamstring injuries suffered during the victory over the Eagles. Marshon Lattimore re-injured his left hamstring, and didn’t practice this week. This re-injury puts him back on the injury cycle that he was on before Washington traded for him on November 5th. General manager Adam Peters said the team was aware of his injury, and they were acquiring him for the long-term after the trade was announced. Lattimore returned vs his former team, the New Orleans Saints, and wasn’t targeted once. The Eagles targeted him 10 times, and he allowed 5 receptions for 68 yards and a TD. He was also flagged for pass interference 3 times in the same quarter for 68 yards.
WR Dyami Brown was also ruled out due to a hamstring injury from the Eagles game. Brown had a big 51-yard catch last Sunday, but won’t be able to got his week. Washington claimed WR K.J. Osborn off waivers from the Patriots two weeks ago, and he could make his debut for them this week. Jamison Crowder and Olamide Zaccheaus stepped up last week with a pair of TDs each.
RT Andrew Wylie also left the game with a groin injury, and was replaced by Cornelius Lucas. The veteran swing tackles likely gets that start on the right side this week. Rookie LB Jordan Magee(hamstring) and UDFA S Tyler Owens(ankle) were also ruled out. The Commanders will be thin at LB with none on the practice squad. Expect a DB or two to be elevated from the practice squad for special teams.
Backup QB Marcus Mariota was excused from practice the last two days for a personal reason, but Dan Quinn indicated that he’ll be available on Sunday.
Jonathan Allen is looking to return from injured reserve after making an earlier than expected recovery from a partial pectoral tear. The expectation was he would miss the season after he suffered the injury against the Ravens in Week 6. Quinn was optimistic about his chances for returning this week. If that happens, Washington will have to make a corresponding roster move to active him from IR.
Terry McLaurin was on the injury report this week for an ankle injury that wasn’t there last week. He was limited yesterday, but had a full practice today and has no injury designation for Sunday’s possibly playoffs-clinching game against the Falcons. DE Clelin Ferrell(knee), TE Zach Ertz(shoulder), and Dante Fowler Jr(groin) are also ready to go this weekend. Ertz and Fowler Jr were full today, but Ferrell was still limited with his lingering knee injury.
