Injury updates
The Washington Commanders were inside the bubble today for another light practice. Yesterday they were outside for a walkthrough, and then tomorrow will be a full practice before the team travels to Detroit to face the Lions in the divisional round of the playoffs. The two teams will play inside the Ford Field dome on Saturday night.
Washington gave veteran rest days to Jamison Crowder, Zach Ertz, Clelin Ferrell, and Dante Fowler Jr. yesterday. Ferrell(knee), Zach Ertz(rib), and Crowder(hamstring) were still limited today.
Washington’s linebacker depth will be tested on Sunday with two players missing another practice. Dan Quinn has already said rookie LB Jordan Magee’s re-injured hamstring will keep him out of this week’s game. The bigger concern is future Hall of Famer Bobby Wagner missing a second practice with an ankle injury. He has only missed 11 snaps on defense all season, and he is an important piece of the defense. Wagner’s leadership would be hard to replace, but if he does miss Saturday’s game, fellow starter Frankie Luvu, and depth guys like Mykal Walker special teams standout Nick Bellore would need to step up on his absence. Washington doesn’t currently have any LBs available to elevate from the practice squad.
Two other players were still limited today. Daron Payne suffered a nasty finger injury on Sunday, but he said he should be good to play this week. That might involve a cast, club, or brace on his dislocated thumb on game day. Rookie TE Ben Sinnott left the game with a shoulder injury, but was cleared to return vs the Buccaneers.
The Washington Commanders have had more kickers signed this season than any other team, and that uncertainty could have played a part in Dan Quinn’s aggressive play calling. Zane Gonzalez popped up on the injury report as a DNP with a hip injury yesterday, but was a full participant today. Washington worked out three kickers and a punter to keep their options open in case Gonzalez can’t go Saturday. They also have Austin Seibert, who Gonzalez replaced, available on injured reserve. He could be activated for the Lions game, or stay on IR for another week if Gonzo’s ready. Dan Quinn declined to provide an update on him last week.
Rookie UDFA TE Colson Yankoff had his 21-day practice window opened last Wednesday, and he was listed as a full participant both days this week. He’s been on injured reserve since November 9th for a hamstring injury, and he could be activated for Saturday’s game. If needed.
