2024 NFL Offensive and Defensive Rookie of the Year: My top five candidates in each race
Early in the 2024 season, Jayden Daniels opened up a yawning gap in the Offensive Rookie of the Year race the size of the Grand Canyon. The Washington Commanders quarterback performed so impeccably that he was on one side of the gorge and the rest of the rookie class was foraging on the other. A fortnight ago, Daniels seemed a shoo-in for the award.
Then Bo Nix made a move. And Daniels’ stumbles against Pittsburgh and Philadelphia — two excellent defenses — opened the door for the Denver QB, whose odds of winning the award jumped up this week (+300).
It still might take an Indiana Jones-esque leap for Nix to actually cross the canyon and threaten Daniels’ claim, but the way the Broncos signal-caller has shined in recent weeks makes it a possibility.
Offensive Rookie of the Year
Rank 1 – Jayden Daniels – Washington Commanders · QB
Odds: -400 | Drafted: Round 1, No. 2 overall
After that glowing intro, it might surprise some that I still have Daniels as my leader for Offensive Rookie of the Year. My reasoning is simple: The depth of dominance still favors the Commanders’ signal-caller. Yes, Daniels’ play has dipped for two weeks, but that was partially because of the defenses faced. The other issue: He played through a rib injury that has surely affected the play-calling. Daniels has been less dynamic with his legs in recent weeks, as defenses key on that part of his game and coordinator Kliff Kingsbury appears to consciously try to protect the QB.
Two games make not a season.
Again, the door for Nix might have gone from shut to ajar — per Pro Football Focus, Nix has splashed 12 big-time throws to Daniels’ 11, while both QBs have recorded six turnover-worthy plays, leading to a turnover-worthy play rate of 1.6 percent for Daniels and 1.5 percent for Nix — but it’s not been kicked wide open yet. Daniels still has far more positives. For the season, Daniels has generated 67.1 total EPA and 0.18 EPA per dropback. Nix sits with marks of -34.2 and -0.08, respectively. Nix has one game with more than a 0.10 EPA per dropback (Sunday against Atlanta, when he posted 0.61). Daniels has eight such games, with a high of 0.68 in the win over Cincinnati. In games he’s finished, Daniels has produced a negative EPA per dropback just twice. Nix has done it five times.
Recency bias shouldn’t make us forget that Daniels led an offense that didn’t punt for more than two complete games. His downtrodden franchise was facing a ton of question marks entering the season, and he negated most of those. His calmness in the pocket has been otherworldly, and he’s helping overcome a defense that has clear holes. It’s still his award to lose.
Rank 2 – Bo Nix – Denver Broncos · QB
Odds: +300 | Drafted: Round 1, No. 12 overall
I don’t need to rehash Nix’s exploits, which were amply covered in the intro. It’s worth noting that the top two players on this list were able to work up a ton of college experience, thanks partly to COVID-19-related eligibility extensions. Nix started 61 games in college and Daniels started 55. You can see it in each player’s maturity and coolness under pressure. Game reps are invaluable.

Game status | Marshon Lattimore ruled OUT vs. Dallas
Quinn added that Lattimore is also starting to get a firmer grasp on the system by going through walkthroughs and being in meetings with his teammates. He believes Lattimore is getting closer and has optimism that Lattimore could make his debut next week against the Tennessee Titans.
“It’s really more when you’re ready, and if that was earlier than the bye [week], then that’s when it would be,” Quinn said. “If it [the hamstring] is fully healed and able to do all the things, the top speeds, then that would be the marker.”
In terms of the other players on Washington’s injury report, Austin Seibert is questionable after missing the last two games with a hip injury. Seibert has been a reliable pickup for the Commanders after struggling to find an answer at kicker in training camp. He’s 22-of-22 on his extra points this season and 25-of-27 on field goal attempts, including a 55-yarder against the Baltimore Ravens.
The Commanders are also coming into their matchup with the Cowboys healthy on the offensive line. Each member of the starting five, as well as swing tackle Cornelius Lucas, will be available for Sunday’s game. Brian Robinson Jr., who missed the Giants and Steelers games with a hamstring injury, was not listed on the injury report and will head up the Commanders’ rushing attack.

Commanders to raise season ticket prices by an average of 11 percent
With a successful season on the field and a more promising future, the Commanders said increased demand was driving the price increase.
With new leadership, a promising young quarterback and renewed national interest, the Washington Commanders are raising season ticket prices by an average of roughly 11 percent for the 2025 season, their largest jump in more than a decade.
The Commanders informed season ticket holders of the increase Friday, with a deadline of Jan. 10 to renew and an opt-out deadline for accounts on auto-renew of Dec. 22.
On average, Commanders season ticket holders will see an increase of $15.58 per month on annual plans.
More than half the team’s season ticket holders will have an increase of 13 percent or less, while 30 percent of accounts will incur an increase of 5 percent or less. More than 10,000 seats — roughly a third of the season tickets up for renewal — will increase by up to 8 percent. The season ticket prices for the upper bowl of Northwest Stadium, where prices stayed flat in 2024, will increase by about $10 per game.
This is the third consecutive year the Commanders have raised season ticket prices after nearly a decade of keeping rates even or, in some pockets of the stadium, dropping prices. In 2021, the team announced it lowered the cost of 11,000 tickets and added perks to some season ticket packages.

Jayden Daniels rises in the NFL trading card world, but who else can climb?
If 2024 Panini Prizm cards end up being the final edition with NFL licensing, this quarterback draft class might not be the worst way to go out.
At least three of the six passers selected within the top 12 picks seem like viable NFL quarterbacks. Two of them reside on potential playoff teams. The third might give the New England Patriots their most legitimate long-term solution since Tom Brady.
It might feel like a Hail Mary if you haul in a Jayden Daniels card at this point.
He’s easily one of the biggest names across the hobby in all sports currently. Daniels was the most searched quarterback in eBay’s collectibles category globally in October. I can’t envision that changing in November given how he’s revived the Washington Commanders.
He’s not only the most productive quarterback in the 2024 NFL Draft class so far, he’s one of the better signal callers in general this season.
A quick look at recent sales from each player’s non-graded 2023 Panini Select XRC (“extended rookie card” — a redemption that predates flagship set rookie cards), via Card Ladder, which tracks sales across major online marketplaces:
- Daniels: $765, Nov. 19
- Bo Nix: $450, Nov. 19
- Caleb Williams: $420, Nov. 17
- Drake Maye: $350, Nov. 20

Washington Commanders vs Dallas Cowboys: Five Questions with Blogging the Boys
Who is one Cowboys player on offense and one player on defense that Washington fans probably don’t know much about, but should?
On defense, linebacker DeMarvion Overshown is showing real promise after missing his rookie year with injury. He is so quick with great closing speed and the ability to deliver a hit. He shows up a few times a game with splash plays on defense. He needs to work on his coverage skills which are lacking, but his blitz skills and ability to run down running backs are making fans excited.
On offense, I’ll be honest, there is just nothing going on there. Maybe wide receiver KaVontae Turpin who is someone who can hit a homerun from anywhere on the field. He is also a threat as a kick and punt returner. He’s probably more dangerous on special teams but he can be a spark. Outside of CeeDee Lamb on offense, the Cowboys are devoid of real weapons.
