On Sunday night, the Maryland Women’s Basketball team will again dance for the 15th consecutive time. Players, coaches, and fans eagerly awaited the Terps’ destination placed. Many speculated that the team would be a fifth seed and wouldn’t host a game at College Park. This shifted following the announcement that Maryland secured a fourth seed and earned two home games host. This upcoming Saturday Maryland welcomes Norfolk State.
The Terrapins will take on the thirteen seed, Norfolk State, led by Diamond Johnson. The Spartans are fresh off winning the MEAC conference championship. This is the first matchup between the two schools.
As we reflect on the season for Maryland, it has been up and down at times. The determination of this team has been nothing but something to respect and appreciate. Head coach Brenda Frese has guided this program to their 15th straight NCAA appearance and their 22nd winning season. Most projected Maryland to be a final-four team. The Terps started with thirteen consecutive victories, and after the loss against USC is when it went down a bit.
Injuries plagued the Terps, and this was evident in some of their losses and victories. The loss of Bri McDaniel in the win against Minnesota. Next, Shyanne Sellers suffered a knee injury in the game against Texas, and Saylor Poffenbarger was out for a few games as well.
Whether they win or lose, the Lady Terrapins always maintained that tenacity. Finishing the season with a 7 -3 record in their last ten games. This team has shown and proven that it can hang with anyone. Now that they are going to the NCAA Tournament and have the opportunity to host two games? Saturday afternoon, the Terrapins will be ready.
