Right-hander Julio Teherán signed a minor league deal with the Baltimore Orioles early Tuesday morning. Teherán was a free agent after exercising the opt-out option of his minor league offer with the Chicago Cubs this weekend.
Teherán originally signed with the Atlanta Braves in 2007, at the age of 16, and started his professional career in 2008 with the Danville Braves. In 2011, Teherán was the top prospect in the Braves system and made his Major League debut on May 7, 2011 against the Philadelphia Phillies.
Teherán pitched for the Braves until 2019 and became a free agent at the end of the season. He was signed by the Los Angeles Angels for a one-year, $9 million contract. In 2021, he signed with the Detroit Tigers. Since then, he has pitched for the San Diego Padres, Milwaukee Brewers, New York Mets, and Chicago Cubs, as well as a multitude of teams for other leagues, such as the Mexican League.
The 33-year old has made 8 starts with the Iowa Cubs, a AAA affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, posting an 8.82 ERA in 32 ⅔ innings. His strikeout rate is 23.1%. Teheran should be able to add to the Orioles’ rotation depth, which is a necessity after injuries to starting pitchers John Means and Tyler Wells. Hopefully, Teháran can execute the job the Orioles need someone to do as they continue to be a playoff contender.
