The Senior Bowl week semi-officially kicks off the start of the NFL scouting process. The “Big Three”, which includes all-star games, the NFL Scouting Combine and Pro Days, will help give general managers and coaches insight into their offseason plans.
A huge part of the offseason is free agency. Washington is projected to have close to $83M in cap space which would place them with the third-most in the NFL. With a lot of holes still needing to be filled, Adam Peters will have to be both aggressive and strategic in how he attacks this period.
Below is my post-Senior Bowl mock offseason which includes Washington’s top needs, players who were re-signed, cuts, trades, key free agent signings and a mock draft. Finally, I give you a look at the 2025 depth chart with the new pieces in place.
Top Needs:
- EDGE – An impact pass rusher (or two) is the team’s top need.
- OT – Watching the O-line struggle this season only magnified the need to improve up front.
- CB – Locking down the outside is still a major priority. Interesting to see where Sainristil fits.
- WR – A LEGIT number two to help complement Terry on the outside is desperately needed.
- RB – Brian Robinson is not a lead back. He’s a complementary piece at best.
- TE – Ertz had a great come-back season, but Washington needs to get younger at TE.
Players Re-signed:
- Marcus Mariota – 1yr, $7M
- Noah Igbinoghene – 2yrs, $7M
- Dyami Brown – 2yrs, $6.5M (potential out in 2026)
- Tress Way – 2yrs, $6.5M (void year added)
Cuts:
- Andrew Wylie
Trades:
- Washington trades Jonathan Allen and a 2026 conditional 4th round pick to the Falcons in exchange for Kyle Pitts.

2025 “Key” Free Agent Signings:
- Tee Higgins (26) – WR: 4yrs, $105M
Higgins turned 26 in January and is one of the most coveted free agents in this cycle. His 6’4” 220 pound frame allows him to box out smaller defender and high-point the football with the best of them. In just 12 games in 2024, Tee caught 73 passes for 911 yards and 10 touchdowns. He’ll make for an amazing weapon opposite Terry McLaurin.

- Talanoa Hufanga (25) – S: 4yrs, $42M
Adam Peters is very familiar with the former All-Pro from his days in San Francisco. Hufanga is a versatile safety who can erase tight ends, cover half the field in a cover 2, play down in the box or as a robber in a cloud zone.
On Talanoa Hufanga being selected as first team All-Pro…
Good example of why coaching/scheme matters.
Hufanga has explosive forward ability — with playmaking instincts.

- Azeez Ojulari (25) – EDGE: 3yrs, $24M
Ojulari is an undersized, uber-athletic EDGE who can rush from either side and also drop into coverage when asked. He’ll turn 25 in the summer and his best years are still ahead of him.
Azeez Ojulari created separation and dipped under the punch of the OT.
The ability to stay balanced through contact while turning the corner into the pocket is rare. Both Ojulari and Burns possess this ability.

- Tyrel Dodson (26) – LB: 2yrs, $8M
Dodson is a young, athletic linebacker who has fluid hips in coverage and will come downhill to hit ball carriers in the mouth.

- Jedrick Wills (26) – OT: 1yr, $3.5M
Wills comes over on a one-year prove-it deal and prove it he just will have to. After an up-and-down rookie season, he started to come into his own in 2021 and 2022. A knee injury derailed half of his 2023 season and he didn’t look like the same player since. He has the size, athleticism and youth to excel at left tackle – he just needs to put everything together.

- Kristian Fulton (26) – CB: 1yr, $3.5M
Fulton is an athletic corner who is scheme diverse. He’s physical at the line of scrimmage when in press-man and has the make-up speed and length to recover when initially beat. He is coming off his best season with the Chargers in their match-up man defense.
Kristian Fulton 2024 stats:
— 15 games
— 51 tackles
— 3 tackles for loss
— 7 pass defections
— 1 interception

Notes
In this mock offseason, Washington’s filled all six of its top needs (some with multiple players at the same position), not only bolstering the starting lineup with talent and youth but also added depth. The trade for Falcons tight end Kyle Pitts is a gamble, but he has all the talent in the world and a fresh start may do him some good. In Washington, he will step in and look to provide a security blanket and redzone threat for Jayden Daniels. With Higgins and Monangai, the Commanders get two young playmakers at important positions of need.
Signing Jedrick Wills (one-year prove-it deal) and drafting Emery Jones in round two allows Bobby Johnson some re-shuffle among the front five – kicking Brandon Coleman inside to left guard and having Nick Allegretti as a solid interior backup. If Wills struggles, Johnson could move Coleman back to left tackle and insert Allegretti at left guard. Jones’ youth and athleticism should be an upgrade to Wylie and he’s very familiar with Daniels from their time at LSU.
The defense gets a major overhaul for the second straight year, seeing two new EDGE rushers, a younger, faster inside linebacker, two new corners and a versatile safety who Adam Peters is very familiar with. Replacing Jonathan Allen on the interior will be tough, but guys like Armstrong and Jean-Baptise could see some time at 5-technique to help keep the rotation fresh and versatile. Sai’vion Jones is an intriguing prospect who can line up inside or at edge. He had a nice Senior Bowl week and flashed a few times during the game.
The time is now in Washington. The Super Bowl window is officially open and to challenge the Lions, Eagles, Packers and 49ers, you have to spend on young talent at key positions and continue to draft well. I think this offseason plan has done just that.
